The ACigs (Australasian Chapter of International Geosynthetics Society) successfully hosted two geosynthetic themed webinars in the first quarter of 2020.
The first webinar of 2020 was held on the 18th of February and was presented by Mike Dobie from Tensar International. Mike presented on “Load bearing bridge abutments supported on polymer geogrid reinforced fill”. The use of polymer geogrids to reinforce fills for the construction of bridge abutments, in which the dead loads and live loads from the bridge are transmitted through the reinforced fill mass to the supporting foundation soils, was presented. The presentation provided some historical data, and then looked in detail at some of the important issues, illustrating them with actual examples. Special attention was given to the seismic design case, for which the performance of reinforced soil structures has been examined using shaking table tests and has proved to be durable and resilient. The webinar was sponsored by Geofabrics.

The second webinar of 2020 was held on the 28th of February and was presented by Graham Fairhead from Fabtech. Graham presented on “Floating Cover Systems for Reservoirs and Ponds”. The webinar presented the different types of floating cover systems available for various reservoirs and ponds. In particular, the webinar focussed on the design, factory fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance of geosynthetic based floating cover systems, using case study examples to highlight important design and installation information. The webinar highlighted how floating cover systems can be used in potable-water, containment, mining, oil and gas development, industrial, and other applications. The webinar was sponsored by Fabtech.
